EMS In-Service Training

Reminder: The EMS In-Service Day is outlined in MOU Section 15.13, Article D. All Baltimore County EMS personnel classified as PEMT, EMT, PM, PMFF, PMFC, EMS Lieutenant, and EMS Captain are entitled to one on-duty EMS training day per year.

****Not to be confused with the BLS Refresher*****

What to expect:

A comprehensive EMS Training calendar can be found by clicking the "EMS Training Calendar" button at the bottom of this page or in the "Quick Links" to the left. The calendar will feature a wide variety of continuing education courses tailored to the needs of EMS clinicians. Each eligible clinician will have the opportunity to select one day as their official EMS In-Service training for the fiscal year, choosing from offerings such as:

  • ALS Refresher Days
  • EMS Symposium
  • NAEMT Programs (PALS, ACLS, TECC, AMLS, BTLS)
  • Cadaver Labs
  • Pediatric Emergency Prehospital Care
  • Specialty Cardiac Courses
  • Skills Labs and more

To ensure equitable access, the FRA will reserve one (1) EMS Officer, four (4) ALS Clinicians and four (4) BLS Clinicians EMS In-Service seats for each course offering. Unused seats will be released 10 days prior to the course start date to maximize participation.

Registering:

Before registering, notify your chain of command that you are requesting to use your EMS In-Service Training Day. Your Deputy/Battalion Chief will review and approve on-duty attendance based on operational staffing needs. Registration will follow the existing process and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. When registering, please indicate if you anticipate to attend while on duty, as that course will be recorded as your EMS In-Service for the fiscal year.

Attendees must arrive on time, dressed in Class B or C uniform, and complete all course requirements—including attendance and post-course surveys.

Station Officers Responsibilities:
Officers must coordinate staffing to support on-duty attendance, following these limits per shift:

  • 1 EMS Officer
  • 4 ALS Clinicians
  • 4 BLS Clinicians

Officers are also responsible for ensuring accurate Telestaff/Workday entries (utilizing the “Training EMS” code), tracking participation, and supporting communication, compliance, and operational readiness.

Important Reminders:

While participation in EMS In-Service is optional, attendance is mandatory once registration is confirmed.

  • Any absences or changes must be reported through the chain of command and to the FRA.
  • Department policies regarding absence, sick leave, and lateness will apply.
