{"id":422,"date":"2017-10-02T17:45:18","date_gmt":"2017-10-02T17:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baltimorecountyfra.org\/inferno\/?page_id=422"},"modified":"2025-12-19T16:39:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T21:39:06","slug":"recertification","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/baltimorecountyfra.org\/inferno\/ems-training\/recertification\/","title":{"rendered":"EMS Recertification"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t\t\t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimorecountyfra.org\/login\/index.php\" target=\"_self\"  role=\"button\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tLog On to the InFERNO Learning Management System\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/baltimorecountyfra.org\/inferno\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/cropped-Fire-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Quick Links<\/em><\/strong>\n\t<h3>Emergency Medical Services Recertification Process<\/h3>\n<p>The following information should be used by <strong>career<\/strong> members of the Baltimore County Fire Department to facilitate recertification of their Maryland EMS credentials.\u00a0 Volunteer <strong>ALS\u00a0<\/strong>providers may take advantage of the BCoFD FRA ALS Refresher or refreshers offered by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfri.org\">Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI)<\/a>.\u00a0Volunteer <strong>BLS<\/strong> providers may take advantage of refresher programs offered by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfri.org\">Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI)<\/a>.\u00a0 BLS Providers (EMR and EMT) must recertify every 3 years, while ALS Providers (CRT and Paramedic) must recertify every 2 years. (National Registry requires recertification every 2 years for all certification levels.)<\/p>\n<p>The Baltimore County Fire Department recognizes that Professional Certification and Licensure is a personal responsibility.\u00a0\u00a0<em><strong>All members are responsible for ensuring that they maintain their level of certification or licensure and accurately document the required training.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<b>Recertification of Basic Life Support Providers<\/b><br \/>\nThe State of Maryland requires that Basic Life Support Providers (Emergency Medical Responders and Emergency Medical Technicians) complete a total of 24 hours of approved recurrent education every three years.\u00a0 This consists of a 12-hour didactic (lecture\/online) portion and a 12-hour skills class.\u00a0 Within 6 months of the provider&#8217;s expiration date, the Fire-Rescue Academy will e-mail instructions for completing the 12-hour didactic portion. Following completion of this program, the provider must successfully pass a Maryland Protocol Evaluation. \u00a0This Protocol Evaluation is conducted on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimorecountyfra.org\/login\/index.php\">InFERNO LMS<\/a>.\u00a0 The third, and final, step is to complete the state re-certification application on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miemsslicense.com\/public\/maryland\/portal\/Login\/default.cfm\">MIEMSS Licensure and Certification<\/a> portal.\n<p><a href=\"mailto:fireacademytraining@baltimorecountymd.gov\">FRA Staff<\/a>\u00a0supervises Basic Life Support Programs.<\/p>\n<strong>Relicensure of Advanced Life Support Providers<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>National Registry Recertification (For Paramedics ONLY)<\/strong><br \/>\nThe State of Maryland requires that Paramedics maintain active certification with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nremt.org\">National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians<\/a>.\u00a0 The National Registry utilizes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nremt.org\/rwd\/public\/document\/paramedic-recert\">National Continued Competency Program (NCCP)<\/a> to specify the educational objectives for these providers.\u00a0 The total curriculum consists of 60 hours which is further defined as:\n<ul>\n<li>30 National Component Hours (set by the NREMT).\u00a0 10 of these hours may be distributive (online).<\/li>\n<li>15 Local or State Component Hours (set by MIEMSS).\u00a0 10 of these hours may be distributive (online).<\/li>\n<li>15 Individual Component Hours (<em>any<\/em> state or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capce.org\/\">CAPCE<\/a>-approved hours).\u00a0\u00a0<em>All<\/em> of these hours may be distributive (online).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The National Component Hours are traditionally conducted as part of your biennial ALS refresher program.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have completed all components of the program, you will receive a certificate of completion which will include the MIEMSS Course ID #. Please upload the certificate and MIEMSS Course ID # on the NREMT website when entering your continuing education.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mfri.org\">Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute<\/a> hosts a two-part refresher program which satisfies this requirement.\u00a0 They are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/zone.mfri.org\/cgi-bin\/schedule.cgi?S=ALS\">EMS-305, National Continued Competency Requirements (NCCR) &#8211; ALS Refresher Part I<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/zone.mfri.org\/cgi-bin\/schedule.cgi?S=ALS\">EMS-306, National Continued Competency Requirements (NCCR) &#8211; ALS Refresher Part II<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Providers are responsible for keeping track of their education and entering it into their certification dashboard on the National Registry website.\u00a0 The Fire-Rescue Academy has developed two guides to assist with the input of your hours into the NREMT system:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/baltimorecountyfra.org\/inferno\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Recertification-Resources.pdf\">Recertification Resources<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/baltimorecountyfra.org\/inferno\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/LMS-Navigating-NREMT-website-12.2020.docx\">Navigating NREMT Website<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/baltimorecountyfra.org\/inferno\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/NREMT-How-to-Guide.pdf\">NREMT Recertification Guide<\/a><\/p>\n<strong>ATTENTION: NREMT AUDIT<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>The NREMT reserves the right to investigate recertification materials at any time.\u00a0 The provider must retain verification of attendance of all education obtained.\u00a0 Failure to submit verification or documentation when audited will result in denial of eligibility to recertify.\u00a0 All information submitted must be accurate.\u00a0 It is incumbent on the provider to be able to produce verification of training if requested by Baltimore County, the NREMT, or MIEMSS.\n<strong>Maryland Licensure Renewal<br \/>\n<\/strong>Once the NREMT recertification has been completed, providers should log on to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miemsslicense.com\/public\/maryland\/portal\/Login\/default.cfm\">MIEMSS Licensure and Certification<\/a> portal and complete an application for recertification.\n<strong>Maryland Cardiac Rescue Technician Renewal<\/strong><br \/>\nPlease note that beginning with the 2018 recertification cycle, the National Registry has downgraded all previously certified NREMT-I\/99&#8217;s to the AEMT level.\u00a0 Providers may choose to keep this\u00a0<em>national<\/em> certification if they wish, but it does not translate to Maryland Licensure.\u00a0 All Maryland Cardiac Rescue Technicians now fall under the State-only re-licensure process.\u00a0 Continuing education requirements for Maryland CRT&#8217;s are identical to the NCCP requirements for Paramedics (above).\u00a0 The attached <a href=\"https:\/\/baltimorecountyfra.org\/inferno\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/MIEMSS-CRT-Renewal-2018.pdf\">CRT Renewal Guide<\/a> provides additional information on how to renew your Maryland CRT License.\n<p>PLEASE NOTE:\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>All NREMT certifications expire on March 31, and all Maryland ALS Licenses expire on April 30.\u00a0 If you have not received verification that your license has been renewed, you do not have a current license!<\/p>\n<p><a
